¡No das Papaya, nena! Do you know what this expression means?😯 On my trip to Colombia, I learned a few new sayings that I had no idea what they meant or how to use them. So if you also have no clue what to do with the expression, you will find a few sayings and their explanations in this blog.
Ñapa: When asking for an extra serving or asking here for a free refill of your juice, for example.
Parce or Parcero: You say to a friend or buddy.
Marica: Used in almost every sentence. This is also what you call your friend. Note: The word is very informal, only use it between good friends.
Paila: Although a frying pan is generally called this, in Colombia this expression is used when something is wrong, ugly or unfortunate.
¿Quiubo?: Is the shortened version of "¿Qué hubo? Which is used to ask what's new or to know what's going on.
Gachas: When someone says this to you, it can mean thank you in a very flattering and affectionate way. Often used between couples.
Porque ajá: The reason for anything. If you answer this, you've explained everything and no one will ask you again.
Lucas: Instead of saying pesos, we say "I only paid 10 mil Lucas." In case you're wondering who Lucas is on your trip.
¡Qué chévere!: An expression to describe something that is particularly beautiful or when you like something.
Mona: Everyone with blonde hair.
¡Qué chimba!: Expression when you think something is cool. You can also use "¡Qué bacano!".
¡No das Papaya!: Let's move on to the most important expression. You will probably use this expression a few times on your journey. Because to be on the safe side, you'd better not give papaya. The expression basically means that you shouldn't give any reason to cause a situation that could end badly for you.
Obviously, these are not all the expressions that are used in Colombia in particular. There are a few more, especially when you are angry and vulgar expressions come into play! Of course, I wanted to learn these expressions first. But I'd rather do a second part on the explanations.🤫 So, did you already know a few terms?
